At first glance you’d be forgiven for thinking that these tiles are, in fact, wood floor and wall coverings. With the grain pattern, colour nuances and grainy texture of natural wood, the tiles are incredibly realistic. But take a closer look and you’ll notice the uniformity and ultra-sleek finish – clear giveaways that the tiles aren’t quite what they seem.
Polished concrete floors have always been used in industrial spaces such as factories and warehouses but, more recently, they’ve become the go-to floor finish in upmarket shops, bars, restaurants and retail spaces. These floors are hardwearing, easy to maintain and are fairly straightforward to install in large, empty spaces, as the concrete screed can be poured and levelled in one site visit then left to set. However, this process is tricky to translate to residential settings and the scaled-down amount of materials and floor area doesn’t necessarily translate to a greatly reduced cost.
Mother of pearl is an iridescent material found in the inner lining of certain shells. It has been used for decorative and building purposes for many thousands of years and the beautiful sheen and colour range is heightened by changing light conditions and reflection. The material is hard-wearing and long-lasting, making it the perfect choice for high-usage rooms such as kitchens and bathrooms.
